Realism vs. Immersion
Most people enjoy playing video games. But certain type of people like to play video simulations. I am one of those people and I want to explain the difference between realism and immersion, so as to create an understanding of why people "play" simulations and enjoy the feeling of being completely immersed in the simulation. In virtual reality, immersion refers to the user’s subjective sensation of being inside the virtual world, and not observing it from an outside perspective. Realism refers conversely to actually experiencing it. In a simulation this could refer to being shot down if you are a pilot - in real life, your wounded and in a lot of pain...most people would agree this is an experience they'd prefer to skip, but in a simulation, if you are wounded, you may crawl and experience the terror of being alone behind enemy lines, awaiting the evacuation helicopter to come get you with some Special Forces on board to secure a perimeter. If the situation is right, you've just had a pretty terrifying experience and although you didn't get shot, you've experienced the need to secure evacuation fast, the need to stem the blood flowing out of your leg from shrapnel, the inability to walk, the fear as enemy troops march through fields close to you trying to find you and then the great elation when the Blackhawk comes in to rescue you. As players, we can enhance our realism through various methods, for example we can turn down lights to allow the simulation to dictate light levels. We can also buy certain add-ons to enhance immersion - force feedback controllers that shake with certain sounds, headphones with surround sounds and force feedback, infra-red head detection - so your in-game character moves it's head with your own...the abilities are nearly limitless... Certain groups stand out in the world of virtual reality as ground breaking. Unity Security Force is one of them, you can find them on Youtube, Flickr and most Armed Assault websites. Using Flight Simulators by Microsoft and Armed Assault by Bohemia Interactive (used by militaries worldwide to train there troops for real), the world of immersion and realism is closing fast. Do you want to experience the thrill of immersive entertainment?
